A Link Between Mercury and Autism?

Remember the Mad Hatter from the childhood classic, Alice in Wonderland? Back then, the process of making hats involved using mercury compounds. Overexposure could produce symptoms referred to as being “mad.”

Could there be a link between mercury and today’s increase in the number of autistic children?

Autism is a developmental disability that affects, often severely, a person's ability to communicate and socially interact with others. Interestingly, it is four times more prevalent in males than females.

In the 1990’s, reported autism cases among American children began spiking, from about 1 in 10,000 in 1987, to a shocking 1 in 166 today!

Some believe autism is merely a developmental disorder that some people are born with. Yet, in recent years, an increasing number of innoculations containing a mercury-based preservative called Thimerosal have been added to the nation’s already burdensome vaccination list. About this same time, some parents noticed that their previously healthy children were descending into a silent, disturbed and physically ill state soon after receiving vaccinations.

If there is a connection, as some parents assert, chiropractic care may help in two ways:

  1. By helping to avoid or reduce the number of inoculations. Many parents choose to enhance their child’s (and their own!) immune systems with regular chiropractic care.

  2. By optimizing the nervous system. Reducing biomechanical stress to the nervous system gives autistic children a better chance of becoming all that they can be.

Dr. Elizabeth Asks some important questions of interest to Fairfax residents - Chiropractor Fairfax Dr. Elizabeth Asks...

Where do most Fairfax residents get their first subluxation?
Being born in a hospital is a common source of subluxation. Trauma from forceps delivery has been replaced with drugs, vacuum extraction, Cesarean section and births that are "scheduled" to fit the workweek routines of Ob-Gyns. That's why we recommend a chiropractic checkup for every Fairfax newborn.
What happens if you stop chiropractic care when you feel better?
Many Fairfax folks recognize that this predisposes you to a relapse. Chiropractors know that muscles and ligaments supporting the spine don't fully heal until after symptoms subside.
